First, scrapbooking was all the rage, then it was all about digital scrapbooking on your computer. Now it’s time to take your scrapbooking with you wherever you go, with TapnScrap for your iPhone!
I know there are a few scrapbook apps out there, but I have been seriously underwhelmed until I saw this one. You can make really detailed, layered pages with this app, and with so many different elements, it takes a few minutes to find your way around. Once you’re familiar with what everything does, you can put a really nice page together in no time.
There are options to choose every step of the way. Start with a background page, which are mostly solid colors and subdued patterns. Then choose a photo or two from your camera roll. Pinch and drag to resize, rotate, and position it on the page.
Now the fun begins, and you can add text and decorative elements. Both of these can be resized and moved around the page. There are some nice fonts included, and you can adjust the color. Use the up and down arrows to move your items backward and forward for some nice layering effects. You can even use bits of virtual tape and add buttons and tags to your pages. Scissors can be used to give your photos a decorative edge, and there are also some filters included for editing your photos. If you go a little crazy and put too much on your page, just drag the elements you don’t want to the trash can.
Once you’re done with your layout, tap the arrow to go back to the album and save your work and create the next page if you’d like. I’m not sure if there’s a limit to how many albums you can create, but there is not a limit on the number of pages in an album. You can view your album in the app with cover flow. You can share your albums on facebook, or save them for printing. The output is fairly high, at 800 x 536, so you could definitely print your pages and make a mini book.
There’s not really anything bad I can say about this app, just a couple nitpicks. The process for saving a page is a little counterintuitive. You have to go back to the album screen and save there. If you forget, you’ll lose the page you just created. I think it would make more sense to be able to save as you work on the same screen. Also, the back arrow looks like Undo to me, so I kept trying to use it for that. The photo filters are a thoughtful touch, but they’re really basic, and there are so many great photo editing apps available that I found them unnecessary, and will probably never use them. Lastly, I’d love to be able to view the album pages in the app in full-screen view, rather than just the cover-flow view. You can see the pages that way once you save to your camera roll, but rather not have to close the app every time I want to do that.
TapnScrap is overall really well done. I understand that they’re working on an update that will include even more free elements! I hope they also take advantage of in-app purchases to offer other add-ons as well, it’s the perfect kind of app for that. Currently, there are starter and Valentine’s elements included, and there is plenty to get you going. With all that’s included, I think it’s well worth $4.99. I give it four jars of applesauce!
Thank you to TapnScrap for kindly supplying an app code for this review!
